One Day

How many of you have read 'One Day' by David Nicholls? There has been a lot of hype surrounding the novel since its publish in 2009, when it received many positive reviews. Its now been adapted into a film which is due for release this year.

I first read the book after being plagued by my Mother to do so for a few months solid- 'Amy have you read that book yet? Its REALLY REALLY REALLY good!!' I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much. A story that taps into two peoples lives on the same day each year for 20 YEARS? How can you build a relationship with the protagonists if the story keeps fast forwarding each chapter? It didn't sound like my cup of tea.

However, after a difficult start, I began to really enjoy the book. Nicholls makes sure you are filled in on the happenings of the past year, so even though you only join the characters for 15th July, you are able to feel like you've been there through it all with them.

The story, which follows Emma and Dexter through their lives and 'on/off' relationship, really struck a chord with me. So many people, like Emma, leave Uni with a good degree but struggle to get work in this climate. Its also frustrating to watch the two characters (who are obviously made for each) go so far out of each others lives at various points. I found myself really touched by Em's feeling of inadequacy next to the successful Dexter.

Thinking back, Emma and Dexter are both characters I think we can relate to, or, relate to people we know.

The book made me laugh, think and ball my eyes out towards the end. Definitely glad my Mum pestered me and I'm looking forward to the film's release! (Starring Anne Hathaway as Emma and Jim Sturgess as Dexer.)

Did you enjoy the book?
